1,800th to Take on Tefillin

Living Jewish | December 10, 2025

The Tefillin for Soldiers project, run by Chabad of Tefen under the direction of Rabbi Kuti Miyodovnik, has reached a moving milestone. The 1,800th soldier to take upon himself the mitzvah of putting on tefillin daily, is none other than Elkana Federman, one of the heroes of the Nova music festival massacre.

Elkana, who served as a security guard at the Nova festival, risked his life with tremendous courage and saved many Jews. Even after being wounded, he returned to the battlefield and continued to fight in Gaza and on other fronts. Recently, Rabbi Miodovnik had the great privilege of presenting Elkana with his own pair of tefillin and supporting him in his powerful decision to begin putting on tefillin regularly.

The Tefillin for Soldiers initiative continues to grow. 84 more soldiers are waiting to receive their personal pair of tefillin. The public is invited to take part in this meaningful project—either by donating a pair of tefillin or referring soldiers who wish to start putting them on.
