5708-1948, in a letter to Rabbi Dovid Bravman, director of the Europe branch of the Chabad publishing house, the Rebbe wrote: “My father-in-law, the [Previous] Rebbe, wants to publish the entire Sdei Chemed, with the most beautiful paper and binding. Could you kindly investigate and inform me on the possibilities and prices for this. (It is about 4,500 pages in eight volumes.)” A 19th-century halachic encyclopedia, Sdei Chemed was revolutionary in that it catalogued recent halachic rulings, making it an essential work for determining practical halacha.
