Vayera | A Person’s Future Depends on Their Children’s Education

Pathways to the Soul

Illuminating teachings and insights on the weekly Parsha of Rabbi Yoram Michael Abargel Zt”l. From the weekly lessons of his son Rabbi Yisrael Abargel Shlita.

In this week’s Parsha, we learn about Avraham Avinu’s tremendous devotion to Hashem, his hospitality, and his willingness to sacrifice everything for the sake of Heaven. Yet, the future of Avraham’s legacy is determined not only by his own actions, but by the education he gives his children. Hashem says about Avraham: “For I have known him, because he commands his children and his household after him, that they keep the way of Hashem, to do righteousness and justice.” (Bereishit 18:19)

This verse teaches us that the foundation of a person’s future is the education they give their children. No matter how great a person is, if they do not invest in their children’s education, their legacy will not endure. Avraham’s greatness was that he ensured his children would continue in his path, and this is what Hashem valued most.

The Importance of Chinuch (Education)

Chinuch is not just about teaching children information or skills. It is about instilling values, faith, and a love for Hashem. The way we speak, act, and prioritize our lives leaves a deep impression on our children. If we show them that Torah and mitzvot are our highest priority, they will absorb this message and carry it forward.

On the other hand, if children see that other things take precedence, they will learn that Torah is secondary. Therefore, every parent must ask themselves: What message am I giving my children? Am I showing them that Torah is the most important thing in my life?

Avraham’s Test

Avraham Avinu was tested with ten trials, but the greatest test was ensuring that his children would follow in his ways. This is not easy, especially in a world full of distractions and challenges. Yet, Avraham succeeded because he was consistent, loving, and unwavering in his commitment to Hashem.

We too must strive to be role models for our children. Our actions speak louder than words. When children see their parents praying with devotion, studying Torah, and acting with kindness, they naturally want to emulate them.

Practical Advice

  • Make Torah study a central part of your home.
  • Pray together as a family.
  • Show excitement and joy in performing mitzvot.
  • Speak positively about Torah and those who learn it.
  • Encourage questions and discussions about faith.

By doing so, we plant seeds that will grow for generations. May we merit to see our children and grandchildren walking in the ways of Hashem, bringing light to the world.
