Additional instances where the Rebbe personally gifts Tefillin
I. Letter dated 21st of Cheshvan, 5728:
. . .Permit me, on the basis of the Great Principle of the Torah - ve'ahavta lre'acha kamocha - to present you with a pair of Tefillin, to replace the loss of your Tefillin, I trust you will accept it in the spirit that it is given. The important thing is to be sure to put the Tefillin on every weekday, for the Mitzvah of Tefillin is very great, and it is also a segulah to receive and enjoy G-d's blessings. . .
II. Letter dated 17th of Adar 5718:
. . .On the question of your desire to buy a pair of Tefillin and a Tallis for your father, you do not mention whether this is a necessity because his present Tefillin and Tallis are inadequate, in accordance with the Law, or whether you simply want to present him with a higher quality of same. If the former is the case, and you think that your father will accept them, you can obtain a loan from our Machne Israel, to be paid out in small sum of $5.00 a month, if you can’t do better than that. . .
III. Letter ca. Nissan 5724
. . .In the spirit of your letter, as well as of your check, I take the liberty of sending you a personal gift, namely, a pair of tefillin, together with an explanatory booklet. . .
IV. Letter dated 4 Adar I, 5717
. . .I received your letter of Jan. 24, and was gratified to read in it that the Teffillin sent to you through our office are in use. . . Re your question how to deal with inquiries about the cost of Tefillin, your answer should be that you do not sell Tefillin, but doing it l’shem Mitzvah. Anyone wishing to pay, may donate, by all means, to the Tefillin Fund to help provide Tefillin for those who cannot afford to pay. . .
