This week is Parshas Vayikra, which discusses the mitzvah of Korbonas. The idea of a Korban is that by a person giving to the Beis Hamikdash he becomes elevated. Even though the person only gave an animal or wine etc., nonetheless since he went out of his way to give from his possessions, this brings holiness into the remainder of his possessions.
The Alter Rebbe says in Tanya that this applies to Tzedaka as well. By giving one fifth or one tenth of one’s profit to Tzedaka, this elevates all of one’s money.
