Dinah the Daughter of Leah

Ohr Hachaim Hakadosh | June 27, 2025

Dinah, the daughter of Leah, whom she bore to Yaakov, went out to see the women of the land.

The Ohr Hachaim notices that the Torah calls Dinah the daughter of Leah, and teaches us that this is to explain why she went out. This has three reasons, and they are all explained in the possuk.

First, the possuk says that Dinah went out, and the reason she went out was because she was the daughter of Leah. If she would have been the daughter of Rachel, things would have been different. Leah was someone who went out, as the possuk says, and her daughter followed her ways. This is in the Medrash.

Second, she was the only daughter of Yaakov, among his twelve sons. She needed to go out, because she was alone. Also, as the daughter of Yaakov, her name was famous in the world. This was why Shechem did what he did.

Third, she went out to see the women of the land as Chazal tell us that Shechem brought women from the town to surround her tent and play music. Eventually, Dinah left to watch them. This is another reason she went out.

The lesson from all of this is that Shechem would never have done what he did if Yaakov would not have been such a famous character whose sons were known all over the world.
