The second reason Hashem created simple people and fools, says the Rambam, is to provide company to the wise people. For the wise people are few in number—by Divine decree. And therefore, it is necessary to have many other people who will populate the world. Lest you think that this reason is trivial, to the contrary, it is even more important than the first reason (that all these people are here to serve the wise in one way or another). For we see that the Ribbono shel Olam kept the kofrim in the land to serve as company for the pious people. And this is the meaning of the Chazal who explain the words in Koheles, האדם כל זה כי, for this is the entire [purpose of] man—the entire world was created to keep company this wise man who keeps the mitzvos.
A person must have company. He cannot be alone. Imagine entering an airplane and being the one and only person there. You wouldn’t survive it! So, Hashem arranged that there should be many people on the plane. It seems to you that they’re bothering you—and indeed, they may provide you with nisyonos—but without them you wouldn’t be able to take it.
Sometimes you come someplace, and there’s a long line. Know that Hashem has placed that line there for you, so that you will feel surrounded by other people or so that you should have nisyonos. After all, the airlines wouldn’t fly out for one person, so Hashem created all these people who want to fly to the same destination as you. They all have one tachlis. Sometimes we feel that we’re secondary to them. But the opposite is true; they’re secondary to you! Everything was created for the ovdei Hashem.
