Fulfilling the Torah in Public

The Way of Emunah | June 27, 2025

The Medrash (Vayikroh Rabbah 35:1) states: “’If you will walk with My laws.’ This is as is stated (Tehillim 119:59): ‘I considered my ways, and I returned my feet to Your testimonies.’ Dovid said: Ribono Shel Olam, I think every day and say that I am going to certain places. But my feet bring me to the batei knesses and batei medrash.”

The Meforshim ask: Did Dovid Hamelech really want to go to certain places besides the bais medrash every day? Didn’t he ever plan on going to the bais medrash?

The Chidushei Harim zy”a answers that every day Dovid planned on doing specific mitzvos, such as learning in a private place in an unassuming way, but his feet brought him to the bais knesses to learn in public so that others would learn from his example and do the same.
