The Torah seems to be promising reward in this world for keeping the Torah and mitzvos. The commentators ask how this can be, as Chazal tell us (Kiddushin 39A) that there is no reward for mitzvos in this world.
The Chovos Halevavos (Shaar Habitachon, end of Perek 4) answers that Hashem does not give reward in this world for mitzvos that are done in the heart (the “chovos halevavos”), and are unseen by man and only known by Hashem. Chazal was referring to such mitzvos when they said that there is no reward for mitzvos in this world. However, mitzvos that are visible to others do bear reward in this world, and those type of mitzvos are what these pesukim are talking about.
The Way Of Emunah
The Rambam (Pirush Hamishnayos, Peah 1:1) answers differently. He says that one does not receive reward in this world for mitzvos bein odom l’makom, but one does receive reward in this world for mitzvos bein odom l’chavero, such as chesed. Regarding such mitzvos, one receives “their fruits” in this world, but the main reward awaits in Olam Haba.
