Letting Your Sins Dominate You Can Cause You to Lose Respect for Yourself

Bitachon Weekly | December 31, 2025

Rashi says that the sins of the Yidden are listed as if they were names of places, without being mentioned openly: נֵ פְׁ מִּ י כְׁ בוֹדָ ן שֶּ ל יִּ לאֵ רָ שְׁ to protect their Kavod. We can suggest that when a person gives himself Tochacha, he should also be careful with his OWN Kavod, and although he should address all his sins, he shouldn’t view himself as a sinner.

Just like these sins are mentioned only: רִֶדִֶב ִךְִִִ זמִֶרִֶ discreetly, so should a person look at his shortcomings: זמִֶרִִֶךְרִֶדִֶב ִ discreetly, and not make them “official. Chazal say: א לִת ה יִר ש עִִ ב פ נ י ִע צ מ ךְִִאבות ִב ִיג Don’t consider yourself a Rasha, no matter how low you have fallen! Although Chazal say: מ כ סֶ הִפ ש ע יוִל ֹאִי צ ל יח ִִִמשליִִ כח ִיג, ִעי' ִיומא ִפו ִב One cannot hide his sins, you still have to be very careful to be M'chabed yourself. People have a tendency to get carried away with their sins.

This gets them depressed, which is worse than the sin itself. (R' Ahron of Karlin). Often, it’s best to totally ignore the sin until Yom Kippur (unless you can do something about it). Just keep going with a double amount of your usual Simcha level, and be happy that you are such a Tzaddik that your sins bother you!
