Rabenu Bechaya (Kad Hakemach, Erech Bracha) writes that when one makes a bracha on food, he brings wealth down and blessing to the entire world. But if someone eats and does not bentch, he is guilty of “forgetting Hashem’s name”. This is seen from the fact that the pasuk immediately after the verse about eating and reciting Birchas Hamazon states: “Be careful, lest you forget Hashem, Your G-d.” Therefore, one is obligated to remember to bentch after eating and to recite all brachos before eating.
