Hemartoh and Hemirchoh Thanking Hashem for the Past Year

Ba'er Heitev | December 10, 2025

I heard in the name of one of the Karliner Tzadikim ZY”A {or Alter Chasidim ZT”L}, to explain this meaning of “Hemartoh”, and “Hemirchoh”, is prevalent to the end of the year, the time which we stand now. “Mehn darf badanken der Bashefer oif der farganginer yohr – We must thank Hashem for the past year”. We must realize that we have merited to live another year of Torah and Mitzvos, to serve Hashem.

If one may wonder, how do we say this on the present year of 5785, of which each person was in some way affected by various calamaties, etc., which we hope and pray it should quickly be history.

Firstly, we must realize that every trial and tribulations that Hashem brings on a person is not more than what he can manage. More so, we must repeat the words of the Sefas Emes ZY”A and many other Tzadikim ZY”A, that Nesoyon [test], comes from the Shoresh [root], Nes [a flag]. When Hashem tests a person if he will withstand the trial, He is actually raising the person to new heights that he did not acquire until now. A person is elevated by what he experiences and achieves greater heights through them. Every Yid has achieved greater heights in his Avodoh [service] to Hashem in the year of 5785. Of course, we Daven [Pray] to Hashem that we should attain these Madreigos [elevations] in a sweet way, as we now will ask Hashem when we eat the Simonim [signs] on Rosh Hashonoh. We dip the apple in honey,

It should be the will of You, Hashem, that we merit a sweet new year.

Reb Levi Yitzchok of Berditchev ZY”A, the defender of Klall Yisroel, would surely in our situation, beseech Hashem, and say, as it says in this week’s Parsha; [26:15]

Look down on to your Holy Nation of Klall Yisroel, awaiting the Geuloh [redemption], fulfilling Your Torah and Mitzvos in every situation, redeem them and Bentch [bless] them with a Shnas Geuloh Viyishu’oh, Omein kein Yihi Rotzon
