Thus, there are proper ways to understand this important concept of הבריות ורוח המקום רוח as taught to us by the Chovos HaLevavos, and there are wrong ways to interpret it. Veering too much to the right or the left (not caring at all about the effects of his actions on others or being overly obsessed with flattering and satisfying others) is misguided, and it is a complete misunderstanding of this idea. The proper way is that שם שיהא ידו על מתאהב שמים, the Name of Heaven should become beloved through him.
The Ribbono shel Olam commands us to take the middle path. This means that one’s mind should be preoccupied with one thing: how to bring pleasure to Hashem. Simultaneously, he should understand that if he can’t get along with people, the Ribbono shel Olam will not derive pleasure from his actions.
