was a free-for-all society, and Yishmael took 9 out of 10 קַ בִ ים portions of Z’nus. (Gemara).
מִצְרַיִם Mitzrayim comes from the word: מֵיצַר Meitzar i.e., boundary. A person who is wild (Paroh type) is really in the jail of his Yetzer Hara. “Paroh” and “Mitzrayim” are words that work together.
The wild, Hefker (unrestricted) person is in the “jail” of his Yetzer Hara. הַשְבִי קָּשֶּה מִכוּלָּּם ב"ב ח ב Captivity is the worst predicament. All those who have pity on the unfortunate broken-hearted hostages should know that being a hostage in the hands of your own Yetzer Hara is much worse!
They say in the name of R' Yisroel Salanter Zatzal why Arabs are always sad (their culture and music, etc.), since Chazal say that 10 קַ בִ ים Kav’s (portions) of Z’nus were given to the world and Yishmael got 9, he’s always crying over the 10th Kav!
Harming Others Is a Result of Belittling and Lack of Respect
Rashi says that: מְצַחֵק means Yishmael was doing Sh'ficus Damim and Gilui Arayos. We can suggest that they are both the same idea. Gilui Arayos means “revealing” and breaking rules and people’s privacy. שְ פִ יכ וּת דָּמִים Bloodshed is the same idea; it is belittling the greatness of man who is a Tzelem Elokim. Killing is a form of making cheap and Hefker (of no importance) the existence of the greatest creation of the universe.
When Yishmael made “jokes” out of the most serious issues, he was just like his mother, Hagar, about whom it says: וַתֵקַל גְבִרְ תָּהּ בְעֵינֶּיהָּ טז ד she lost respect for her master, Sara Imeinu. When people are cheap in your eyes, then you can kill them, and invade their privacy. Nothing is important or worthy. No dignity, no honor. There is no Kavod HaB’riyos (for people); not for self, and not for others.
How much work needs to be put into respecting yourself and others! Now we see why Yosef said: אֵינֶּנּוּ גָּדוֹל בַבַיִת הַזֶּה מִמֶּנִּי וישב לט ט “I am the greatest person around here” to stop himself from Arayos. How important is “holding” from yourself and from others. Criticism is also a subtle form of undermining and cheapening. Always see good!
כֹּל הַפּוֹסֵל בְּמוּמוֹ פּוֹסֵל The way you view others, you are pointing out exactly your own problems.
