The Problem of Eisav Lack of Depth and Understanding

Bitachon Weekly | June 27, 2025

The name Edom (red) is very appropriate for Eisav HaRasha. Edom is nothing more than a color, without a hint of the true nature of what he’s eating (lentils). This is Eisav’s life; full of superficiality. Just like a “color” is the basic of basic of what’s in front of you without any understanding of what’s really going on. This is exactly Eisav’s entire existence; just Olam HaZeh without any realization of the up-and-coming true world.

This is the Tzara of all mankind: No depth and understanding of the people you have to deal with, or the true nature of your many issues. People hate each other and start wars, all because they don’t have any depth. All the Machlokes and Sin’as Chinam. You may be annoyed by the person in front of you, but you have no idea about his background, which causes everything about him.

The Human Being Was Created to See If He Reacts to Other People’s Idiosyncrasies with Anger or Compassion

People from different cultures have totally different mentalities, and the human being was created to see if he reacts to other people’s idiosyncrasies with anger or compassion. To feel another person’s pain, and his limitations that you may have no Shaychus with. That’s why you attack him, since outwardly he doesn’t act the way you are used to.

אַגְרָא דִּשְמַעְתָא סְבָרָא (Berachos 6b): The main reward for learning is the understanding. How Geshmak it is when you understand the root and the reason. How much Simcha you get when you clarify your problems. The Sechel sheds light, and everything makes sense. Why is this person always depressed? Or anxious or lazy or not so frum? Or impatient? Find out his background, and you’ll understand it all. You’ll learn to be Dan L'kaf Zechus, and: מְמילָא as a result they’ll be Dan you L'kaf Zechus in Shamayim. (For example, maybe this nasty person doesn’t sleep well at night?)

The Hungarians, the Polish, Russians, Sephardim, Litvaks, Germans, Chasidim, Belz, Satmar, Ger, Viznitz; every type is a world in its own, and needs to be understood and appreciated, and deserves to be judged L'kaf Zechus. Those who aren’t M’ayen (think) and have an “Edom” mentality are full of anger and/or jealousy, hatred, or excess admiration, etc.

The Truly Rich Person Is Someone Who Thinks and Understands

עַמִּי לֹא הִּתְבּוֹנָן (Yeshaya 1:3) – My people did not try to understand. A person must also understand himself, and where he’s coming from. What is realistic to expect from yourself, and what is a Ma'aseh Satan, i.e., to imitate Madregos that you were not created to attain. In the Bais Hamikdash there was a Mizbeach HaPenimi (The “inner” Mizbeach, i.e., inside the Heichal) this was also called Mizbeach HaKetores, and Ketores is: מַעַשֶׁרֶת (makes you rich). (Chazal). We can say (at least: בְּדֶרֶךְ רֶמֶז as a Remez) that when you see the Penimiyus (inside) of a situation, you become “rich”. Otherwise, you are an: עָנִּי בְדַעַת “poor” in understanding.

Ketores smells delicious. Probing and being M’ayen (thinking) and understanding is the Simcha of mankind.
