When Bilaam saw that the doorways of Yidden were positioned away from one another, he understood that this People had channeled their kochos for the good. This was a People who were not interested in what their neighbors have in the wrong sense, the gashmiyus sense, to want what others have. Thus, their kochos were channeled in the right direction. It was not that they didn’t have curiosity, and that they had no interest in their neighbors. That is not what מכוונות פתחיהם אין means. They had the right sort of interest!
That’s when Bilaam understood that they were interested in the lives of their neighbors only for the right reasons! When Bilaam saw that they were turned away from each other in the gashmiyus sense, he understood that they were completely tuned into their neighbors for good reasons, in order help and uplift their neighbors—and this is the greatest conduit for השכינה השראת. Because there is brotherly love among them.
