Is it a great experience being in your company? Would YOU enjoy it?
Your relationship with your child isn't built upon the instructions you give him or her. It's built upon the feelings you provoke. What are you saying and doing each day to provoke FEELINGS of closeness, warmth, happiness, trust, security, contentment and other aspects of love? How wonderful is it to be near you on most days? Fortunately, you can always make it more wonderful if you want to!
How is your current strategy actually working? Do you SEE improvement?
It takes kids time to learn their lessons. Whether you are using positive reinforcement or negative consequences or any other intervention, you have to sit back and wait for the results to kick in. However, you need to actually LOOK for results. If you don't SEE results - at least SOME improvement - within a few weeks of using a new strategy, try a different strategy. Don't keep doing the same thing that isn't working!
