Not Relying on One’s Own Strength:
In accordance with the Medrash, Rashi says that Potiphar saw that Hashem was with him because “the name of Hashem was constantly in his mouth“.
Sefer Divrei Yisroel asks what Rashi is adding with his words. The pasuk clearly says that Potiphar saw that Hashem was with Yosef because He granted him success in everything he did. Why does Rashi have to add another explanation?
He answers by noting that the reason given in the pasuk is hard to understand. How is the fact that Yosef had success proof that Hashem was with him? One can see that wicked people also are often successful, as is stated in Tehillim (92:8): “When the wicked flourish like grass“.
He answers this question by saying that Potiphar knew that Hashem was with Yosef by looking at his reaction to his successes. When things went well for him, he did not take credit. He did not claim that he had succeeded because of his own abilities and talents. Rather, he gave all the credit to Hashem. We see that he always did this from the words he told Pharaoh (41:16): “The wisdom is not mine, but Hashem will answer. He will put an answer into my mouth that will bring peace to Pharaoh“.
Rashi is explaining that Potiphar saw that Hashem was with Yosef because whenever he succeeded, the name of Hashem was constantly in his mouth. He would constantly say that all of his successes were sent from Hashem.
