The Descent and Ascent of the Shechinah

The above refers to the situation at the beginning of creation. However, as a result of the sin of the tree of knowledge the whole world experienced a descent as the Medrash states:

(And has been brought in the previous Rebbe’s parting Maamor with the opening words בָאתִּי לְגַנִּי אֲחֹתִּי כַלָה which was said thirty years earlier as in נָהשָ יםשִּ לֹבִּשְ וַיְהִּי “And it was at thirty years” ) that as a result of the cardinal sin of the tree of knowledge the Shechinah departed from the earth to the first heaven until thereafter, it departed all the way until the seventh heaven, thereafter along came seven Tzadikkim who brought the Shechinah back down from above to below until Moshe Rabbeinu who is the seventh and all sevenths are favoured; he brought it down from the first heaven to earth.

The primary Divine revelation was in the Beis HaMikdosh as the Possuk states: וְעָשׂוּ לִּי מִּקְדָש וְשָכַנְתִּי בְתוֹכָם “They shall make for Me a sanctuary and I will dwell in them”.

This is because the erection of the Mishkon took place on Rosh Chodesh Nissan (As it is written in last week’s Parsha: בְיוֹם הַחֹדֶש הָרִּאשוֹן בְאֶחָד לַחֹדֶש תָקִּים אֶת מִּשְכַן אֹהֶל מוֹעֵּד “On the day of the first month, on the first of the month, you shall set up the Mishkon of the Tent of Meeting” and then thereafter it says: וַיְהִּי בַחֹדֶש הָרִּאשוֹן בְאֶחָד לַחֹדֶש הוּקַם הַמִּשְכָן “It came to pass in the first month, .... on the first day of the month, that the Mishkon was set up.”) This was the eighth day of Milu’im (after seven consecutive days of Milu’im) and as it has been explained in several places the number eight Protects the cycle.
