Why Yaakov Answered Only About the Children

Gan Hatorah | December 31, 2025

חכמת התורה – 33:5

“וישא עיניו וירא את האנשים ואת הילדים ויאמר מי אלה לך, ויאמר הילדים אשר חנן אלקים את עבדך” – “He raised his eyes and saw the women and children, and he asked, ‘Who are these to you?’ He answered, ‘The children whom Hashem has graciously given your servant’.” Eisav met Yaakov Avinu and saw women and children. He asked Yaakov, “Who are these?” Eisav asked Yaakov who all these people were, and Yaakov Avinu only answered about the children but not about the women. Why didn’t Yaakov Avinu answer about the women? Eisav was challenging Yaakov Avinu, saying to him who are all these people – meaning why do you have all of them? Why did Yaakov Avinu get both daughters of Lavan, Rochel and Leah, when Eisav was related the same way as Yaakov Avinu and should have gotten at least one of them? Yaakov Avinu answered this question by saying that it was the children that caused it. Meaning, that these “good children”, the holy Shivtei Koh, were going to be born. These good children could never have been born from the wicked Eisav, and thus Yaakov had to marry both Rochel and Leah, to bring forth these children that were meant to be in the world.
