Yaakov's Dramatic Concern for Ruchniyos

Gan Hatorah | December 31, 2025

Now we can understand what Yaakov Avinu was saying to Eisav, that the children and the nursing flock were all “upon him” and why he was being so dramatic. Yaakov Avinu was not really referring to the Gashmiyos, rather he was focusing on the Ruchniyos. He did not want to go with Eisav. Yaakov Avinu was saying that he took the responsibility of the Ruchniyos of his family very seriously, and it needed to be guarded very well. While Yaakov Avinu was able to survive being in the house of Lavan, being subjected to the dearth of Ruchniyos in that location, and still come out of it on a great spiritual level. However, Yaakov Avinu feared that his descendants throughout the generations would not be able to do the same. He explained that they are weak, and if they are subjected to what will counter Ruchniyos, it will have a terribly adverse effect upon them. He was being dramatic, for Ruchniyos is what really matters, and he was saying that if Eisav will be near Yaakov, it will harm the Ruchniyos of Yaakov, and will spiritually kill them. Thus, Yaakov was explaining why he would go on his separate way, and would at some point in time later meet up with Eisav. Once Mashiach will come, and Klal Yisroel will be spiritually strong, at that time they will be able to be near Eisav and not be influenced. May we be Zoche to see those days, with the coming of Mashiach, במהרה בימינו אמן!
