Gan Eden Is a Place for Those Who Purify Their Middos

There is a famous Chazal about Hashem inviting Y'ravam ben Nevat to do Teshuva, and then Hashem will walk together with him and “Ben Yishai” (Dovid) in Gan Eden. Y'ravam asked: Who will be first? “Ben Yishai will be first”. “If so, I do not want” (indeed, Y'ravam lost his Olam HaBah). A person who likes Kavod and cannot be: סוֹבֵּ ל tolerate that others are better than him, suffer the consequence of: הַקִנְּאָה וְּהַתַאֲוָה וְּהַכָבוֹד מוֹצִיאִין אֶׁת הָאָדָם מִן הָעוֹלָם Kin'ah, Ta'ava, and Kavod take a person out of the world. They don’t belong in Gan Eden, which is a place for those who purify their Middos.
