The custom is for the groom to marry the bride by giving her a ring.
In this week’s Torah portion, some commentaries explain that Eliezer was a messenger to marry Rivkah to Yitzchak, and the jewelry that he gave her was like our custom to use a ring. (Other commentaries explain that he was a messenger to bring Rivkah to Yitzchak, and only then they were married.)
Commentaries explain that when Yehudah gave Tamar his seal, he was marrying her with a ring.
Rings should not be given before the wedding.
