The Proof is Good Middos Not Mofsim

The Way of Emunah | December 31, 2025

The Proof is Good Middos. Not Mofsim:

Rashi says that he saw that the water rose to her.
The Modzhitzer Rebbe zy”a (Sefer Divrei Yisroel) asks: Eliezer had just witnessed a clear miracle. The water rising up to her was a Divine sign that she was the right girl. If so, why did he have to test her again by asking her to give him water?
He answers that the main proof of a person’s righteousness is their middos. Miracles are not a proof.
Early chasidim discerned a similar idea from the words of tefillah: “Osos u’mofsim b’admas bnei Cham.” “Bnei Chaim” – non-Jews – need miracles and wonders in order to believe in Hashem. But Yidden do not need miracles to have emunah.
