The Value of the Individual and Lessons from Shevet Dan

Bitachon Weekly | June 27, 2025

הַחַלָש יֹאמַר גִּבוֹר אָנִּי יואל ד י

The Nebechel Shall Say: I Am a Gibbor! The story of Shimshon HaGibbor is fascinating, since he was a one-man operation who killed and terrorized tens of thousands of Pelishtim. And even after his Petira, for 20 years, the Pelishtim were afraid of Klal Yisroel! (According to R' Nosson Wachtfogel Zatzal, לֶ עָ תִ יד לָ בֹא in the future he will be Moshiach ben Yosef’s general). His entire story teaches us to respect the power of a Yachid (individual).

כָל הַּנֶׁחֱשָלִים אַּחֲרֶׁיךָ תצא כה יח Amalek attacked and hurt the: נֶׁחֱשָלִים weaklings which is Shevet Dan. The only Shevet who produced a Yachid who had the Shtempel “Gibbor” (Shimshon HaGibbor) were these weak: נֶׁחֱשָלִים nebechels! Hashem wants to teach us how to value every Yachid. And his deaf and dumb Zeide, Chushim ben Dan, was the one who was Zoche to kill Eisav, although he was younger and from an inferior next generation; only he was Zoche to kill Eisav, and not the mighty Tzaddikei HaDor (i.e., the twelve Shevotim).

Also, we find that the only Shevet who slew the Canaanim and captured their city naming it after their Zeide was Shevet Dan! The: יָרוּד שֶבִשְבָטִים lowest of the Shevotim is the proudest! This is a general rule: הַחַלָש יֹאמַר גִבוֹר אָנִי יואל ד י the weakling shall say: I am a Gibbor! If you think that you and your Tefilos are worthless, it might be a sign of the extreme opposite!

Teshuva!

I had recommended writing down all your Chesronos (one line for each) and next to your Chisaron write a possible solution. I was given a major Haskama from an Adam Gadol, and those who tried this, rave over it. You show Hashem that you’re trying, and that’s priceless. The Gezeira of: תַּ "ח וְ תַּ "ט “Tach v’Tat” (1648-9) was the most unmentionable horrific pain Klal Yisroel had ever endured until then. It was a puzzle, because Poland was loaded with plenty of learning Torah for the past 150 years.

They did say that there were “Bess’ere Yidden” (“better” Jews) who looked down at inferior ones. Sin’as Chinam is always a strong possibility, and a famous Chasidishe Admor from prewar Europe remembered plenty of it. The Navi says that when Moshiach comes: אֶׁפְרַּיִם לֹּא יְקַּנֵּא אֶׁת יְהוּדָה ישעיה יא יג Shevet Ephraim will not compete with Shevet Yehuda. We see from the Pesukim how different Shitos can cause the whole problem, and the Chofetz Chaim Zatzal warns that putting down an entire group in Klal Yisroel is way worse than normal Lashon Hara.
