Kalev acted alone (without Yehoshua) when he quieted down Klal Yisroel, and when he went alone to daven. For good reason he was Malchus. A Melech is independent, like oil that always floats on top, and doesn’t mix with other liquids. Every Yid should have a loner side to him where he is alone with his Maker (Hashem) and he isn't involved in: מ הְְּּ יֹאמ רוְּּה ב רִ יוֹת (What will people say??) and Kavod and external supports. Both Dovid and Yehuda (who was also a Melech) didn't listen to advice. (Medrash). They acted alone to please Hashem, without worry about public opinion.
Dovid danced not in the fashion that his dear wife liked and he didn't care. A wife can be an עֵזֶר help, but every true man also has his own individuality. Kalev went alone to Kivrei Avos and he succeeded with his Tefilos. Unfortunately, most people are one big piece of: "What are people saying about me?" It is a big Mazal that the frum world live together, so the: מ הְּיֹאמ רוְּּה ב רִ יוֹתְּ (What will people say??) is basically a Ma'ala, and helps you remain a frum Jew.
But loads and loads of a person’s potential is lost because of his great fear of Bizyonos and his lust for approval. Many people are totally Battel to a Derech HaLimud or a Derech Avoda which isn't really good for them, but they can't even dream of doing things "outside the box". And especially Zikkui HaRabbim suffers. Unfortunately, you must have your never-ending comfort mode, and it may be destroying your true greatness.
I recommend loads of Novardok and Slabodka exercises in not being afraid of people through “Pratim”, and Chazzering (reviewing) constantly your Maalos! Just like Kalev was Moser Nefesh, and he acted alone, so was he rewarded alone, like it says: ו ע ב דִּ יְּכ לֵבְְּּידְּכה My servant, Kalev. It says in Mishlei: לֵבְְּּ יוֹדֵע ְּמ רֹ תְּנ פ שוְֹּוּב שִמ ח תוְֹּלֹאְּיִת ע ר בְּז רְְְּּּ משליְּידְּי No one else can feel the pain of your struggle, but the joy of your triumph will be felt by you alone. You know your pain when you have a unique Avoda that others may not understand, but in the end you will have reward and Simcha and no one else.
Without an independent streak in your system, you can fall, Chas V'shalom, and become a cheap Rodef Kavod who must always have people; or else he becomes lonely and depressed
