The same is true when we approach Hashem. Of course, this isn’t totally a precise metaphor, because while this askan is a mere mortal who has limited time and resources, the Ribbono shel Olam can surely help everyone, and He’s utterly unlimited. Nevertheless, in Shamayim they wish to see whether the person is serious and earnest in his request.

When a Yid gets up on Shavuos and davens for success in Torah, we ask him: Where were you before Shavuos? You were busy with other things. It wasn’t foremost in your mind. Today, you’re here because it’s the avodah of the day. The next day, when you need to make more money, or find a shidduch for your child, you’ll daven for that.... But this isn’t a burning matter for you.

Such davening lacks bittul to Hashem. This person hasn’t decided: “I desperately need to be matzliach in Torah, and I won’t stop davening for it.” He hasn’t prostrated himself before the Ribbono shel Olam and declared: “I will not leave before I get this from You! I’m willing to forgo other things, but not this!
