R’ Shach Zatzal used to constantly repeat the words of the Rambam who says that the best form of learning Torah is working on Emuna and Bitachon. There were Tzaddikim who were always involved in basic learning Torah and Gemara, yet they were always thinking of Hashem. It takes a special Adam Gadol to do both at the same time. It was known by all that R' Chatzkel Levenstein Zatzal saved the Mirrer Yeshiva during WWII since he was much more directly involved in the Mussar of Emuna and Bitachon.
Chazal say that when Moshe Rabeinu was shown how in the future Rabbi Akiva will Darshen (deduce): תִ לֵּ י תִ לִ ים שֶׁ ל הַ לָ כוֹת “mounds” of Halachos from every: תַ ג crown (protruding from the letters) in the Sefer Torah, he asked: “Why isn’t the Torah given by Rabbi Akiva?”. Why is Rabbi Akiva’s ability to make so many D’rashos so Chashuv, that Moshe considered him a preferable candidate to give the Torah?
