Question
The Rav mentioned a story about R’ Zundel of Salant who had an older daughter that was still in Shiduchim, and R’ Zundel had Bitachon that he was going to get a top Shidduch. In the end, he got the famous R’ Shmuel of Salant, who became the Rav of Yerushalayim for seventy years. R’ Zundel had so much Bitachon and was so positive that he would get R’ Shmuel, to the degree that he wasn’t even surprised when it happened. How did R’ Zundel reach this level?
Answer
I once said a Pshat in this. R’ Zundel was famous for the quote: הב טוֹל ה ב כ ל ע כ which means that EVERY SETBACK IS FOR THE GOOD, and R’ Zundel lived by this principle. The Maharal explains that “for the good” means “extreme” good. Since this was R’ Zundel’s Shita in life which he lived by, that’s how he was able to insist that his daughter’s “waiting” so long to find a Shidduch was “for the extreme good”, i.e. to be Zoche to a son-in-law like R’ Shmuel. When you have a Shita, IT COMES TRUE. Like when you are davening for a sick person, but you don’t remember his name and mother’s name, yet you insist that this won’t get in the way of your Tefila; your Tefila will actually work. IF YOU BELIEVE IN SOMETHING, IT WILL WORK. The problem is that people have a lot of Yi'ush in their Tefila.
