Relaxing Despite Your Pecklach Is Not a Choice Its a Must

Bitachon Weekly | December 31, 2025

The Ramban quotes the Rambam who says that the reason why the Torah commands us to have Menucha and not work on Shabbos is to remind us that Hashem took us out from forced labor in Mitzrayim, to give us freedom and Menucha. Despite the turmoil and needing to work-hard in Olam HaZeh in order to survive, we take a day off, to rebel against “Tevah” which demands work. Shabbos and Bitachon is the same idea. Despite a negative situation, we relax with hope and/or acceptance. **

Those who desecrate Shabbos shall surely die. Indeed, if a person doesn’t teach himself to “chill” despite his issues, it can destroy his situation and his physical: ףגוּ body, and even his life. Anger, depression, and jealousy are dangerous; and your body loses tons of energy, vitamins, and Kochos when you don’t learn to relax and accept. Melachos (forms of skilled work, forbidden) on Shabbos, and also 39 לְ מַ קוּת Malkus (lashes, given by Bais Din for violating a “Lav”, i.e. something the Torah said “not” to do). We can suggest that just like 39 לְ מַ קוּת Malkus symbolize Yissurim, so do 39 לָ מְ אכוֹ ת Melachos on Shabbos. ***

Resting from work on Shabbos symbolizes not worrying about your Yissurim and pecklach; and instead, having Bitachon. 40 is a Shleimus’dik (complete) number. Malkus is only 39, since Hashem wants to detract and soften the Yissurim that He needs to give us. Similarly, the knowledge that there are 39 Melachos Shabbos and not 40, teaches us that Hashem dislikes giving Onesh (punishments) and hard work. That’s why we rest completely, as if we are in Gan Eden, which was Hashem’s: מוּשְ כָל רִּ אשוֹן original plan. ****

Every Shabbos, we leave our personal Mitzrayim’s and our issues, and engage in learning Torah and singing and eating good foods. We rest: שַ בָ ת הַ יוֹםלַ ה' (devoting the day to Hashem) and enjoy! Shabbos is life! Those who desecrate it shall surely die. Shabbos and Bitachon isn’t a choice (if you WANT to calm down, go ahead). You MUST calm down, or else you get sick, Chas V'shalom. Being nervous, uptight, and depressed causes sickness, Rachmana Litzlan. Bitachon is a Mitzva (commandment), not a convenience! (After all the miracles I did for them, when will they finally believe in Me??) was a death sentence for excessive worrying and not having Bitachon. *****

People don’t realize that being negative and self-destructive is a vice, a sin, and a true Yetzer Hara. Neither your Neshama or body can handle it. Similarly, people don’t realize that “holding from yourself” is a Mitzva Rabba, and your entire existence hinges on your positive self-image. Every person must say: “The entire universe was created just for me!”. Basic Ga'ava is survival, and people who think they are “zero”, don’t function. ******
