Keep Elul Happy and Calm and Full of Thankfulness

Bitachon Weekly | August 25, 2026

In his last years, R' Gershon Liebman Zatzal said that in our Dor, the main Teshuva of Elul should be Middas HaBitachon which is the biggest Segula and the biggest Mitzva. So relax and stay calm, and this in itself is the greatest Zechus to be Zoche on Yom HaDin. (Of course, if you are a parent or Rebbe or Menahel, etc., you need to be strict and tough, and nothing bad happens to people who do their job).

Keep Elul happy and calm and full of thankfulness. When Hashem sees you are grateful for the past, He’ll give you also a great future and a: שָׁנָה טוֹבָה וּמְתוּקָה מִדְּבַשׁ sweet new year. The Ikar is just to TRY to be sweet and good and being Dan everyone L'kaf Zechus especially your enemy. Try never to complain or critical! The more you make believe things are good, the more you invite more goodness.

You can still write down all those areas that you feel a need to improve. And write a possible solution. When you pinpoint in writing what needs to be addressed, then you clear your mind and it calms you down. Even if you don’t act on your problems and do Teshuva, it still has lots of benefits, since you’re showing Hashem that you’re trying: עַד מָקוֹם שֶׁיָּדוֹ מַגַּעַת your very best. And: לֹא עָלֶיךָ הַמְּלָאכָה לִגְמוֹר You are not responsible to get it all done.

I know people who never argue with their spouses and with others. They are quick to say “I’m wrong”, and “admit” even though they are innocent. Silence is power. By saying nothing, you are giving your problem over to Hashem, and you are having Bitachon that things will work out. But when you argue, you can make things worse, Chas V'shalom.
