The Value of Effort and the Danger of Perfectionism

Bitachon Weekly | June 27, 2025

STORY There is a story at the end of Sefer Shmuel Aleph, where Dovid destroyed an Amaleki band, and he took loads of booty. The 400 men who went to war with him wanted all the spoils, since they risked their lives, whereas the 200 men who stayed behind watching the Kelim (equipment) didn’t deserve anything. These 400 men are called: אִּיש רָּע וּבְלִּיַעַל ש"א ל כב “wicked B’liya’al people”, which means: ב ל י עוֹל שׁ ְמ ְי ְם one who cast off the yoke of Heaven, the lowest term.

Yet, Dovid spoke to them in an Eidel way, and he called them: אֶׁחָּי “My dear brothers” (similar to Yaakov, who called the locals of Aram: אַחַי “my dear brothers”, although they were the worst swindlers). Dovid told them that the 200 people should get an equal share. We see Dovid’s heart, how he cares for the underdog (and a Melech is the heart of the nation. Rambam). And he followed in the way of Avraham Avinu, who after conquering the four kings, gave equal booty to those who were remained behind to guard the Kelim. (Rashi).

We can suggest that all these Milchamos are also a Remez for Milchemes HaYetzer, and those who can’t fight full force (and the Meforshim say that those who stayed behind were indeed weak) but do the best they can, are just as good. And look how these 400 men are like the worst Reshaim. Those who don’t Fargin, and insist on the highest Madregos, can be downright dangerous, since such an attitude “Passels” (discredits) so many people.

Perfectionism is similar to: ב ל י עוֹל שׁ ְמ ְי ְם casting off the yoke of Heaven, since Hashem only wants you to do the best you can. It’s love of Kavod and success that can get a person without: עוֹל שׁ ְמ ְי ְם the yoke of Heaven; just: עוֹל ב ש ר ו ד ם the yoke of a Basar V'dam, or big Hatzlachos. No respect for trying and wanting to improve. “Just be 100% or else you belong in the garbage, Chas V'shalom”.

During Zman Cheiruseinu, a person has to try to become a top Oved Hashem, but in a relaxed manner, and with the knowledge that you serve ONLY Hashem, who is: מָּלֵא רַחֲמִּים full of compassion, and even gives you Schar for not eating blood. (Mishna). ר צ ה ה ק דוֹשׁ ב רוּךְ הוּא ל ז כוֹת אֶת י ש ר אֵל משנה סוף מכות Hashem wants to give us only Zechus. Just like Hashem wants to be M'zakeh you, so should you try to be M'zakeh yourself, and be Dan yourself L'kaf Zechus.

The reason why Hashem revealed Himself to Avraham Avinu in: אֵלֹנֵי מַמְרֵא the territory of Mamrei, was since he encouraged Avraham Avinu to do the Bris Mila. (Rashi). Perhaps it can also be because Hashem wanted to show Chashivus to Mamrei who remained behind during the war and did only Shmiras (watching) the Kelim, to give Chashivus to such a person.
