Yetzias Mitzrayim and the Power of Tefilin

Bitachon Weekly | June 27, 2025

The Ramban says that we remember Yetzias Mitzrayim by wearing Tefilin, which is a constant reminder of basic truths in Emuna. Mitzrayim was a Makom of K'fira and Ta'avos Olam HaZeh. Yosef HaTzaddik was in Mitzrayim before Klal Yisroel came, for good reason. He was the forerunner who would teach us by his example how to conquer the Yetzer Hara. He told the wife of Potiphar: אֵינֶנוּ ג דוֹל ב ב י ת ה זֶה מ מֶנ י וישב לטט “A great person like me doesn’t do lowlife things”.

And he saw the Choshen and was given a message from Shamayim: if you sin, Chas V'shalom, then your stone will be missing from the Choshen; absent from the most prestigious group of Tzaddikim in the world (the Shivtei Ka). (Gemara). When we left Mitzrayim we left a big Makom Tamei, but we need to continue to always fight against our Yetzer Hara. The Rambam says that Tefilin brings Anava, and the Shulchan Aruch says that it makes you forget your Ta'avos.

Tefilin are a badge that show you to be the Eved (servant) of Hashem, the Melech Malchei HaMelochim. Tefilin Shel Rosh are like a crown on your head, and you have a job to always use your head while wearing them (and one may not be: מֵס יח ד ע ת distract his attention from his Tefilin while wearing them). When you say the Bracha of: עוֹטֵר י שֹ ר אֵל ב ת פ א ר ה “He crowns Yisrael with glory” you kiss the Shel Rosh, since Tefilin is called: פ אֵר ךָ יחזקאל כד יז your glory.

Overcome Your Base Desires of Olam HaZeh by Your Desire to Be a Great Person

The Passuk says: ו ר אוּ כ ל ע מֵי ה א רֶץ כ י שֵׁם ה' נ ק ר א ע לֶיךָ ו י ר אוּ מ מֶך the nations of the world will see that the name of Hashem is upon you, and they will fear you, and Chazal say that this refers to the Tefilin Shel Rosh. Your Tefilin are your pride and joy, and it causes the Goyim to respect you. The Ta'ava of being a respectable person overcomes the base Ta'avos of Olam HaZeh. The Goyim see on you the true beauty of a Tzelem Elokim and his true dignity, when he wears a crown on his head which symbolizes using your Sechel vs. running after Ta'avos.

This is strikingly similar to the story of Megilas Esther, which ends off with: ל י הוּד ים ה י ת ה אוֹר ה ו ש מ ח ה ו ש שן ו יק ר אסתר ח טז the Yehudim had Orah (light), Simcha, Sasson, and Y’kar (glory); and Y’kar (glory) means Tefilin! (Gemara). Megilas Esther is a lesson in replacing fake Ta'avos Olam HaZeh with the true beauty of Torah and Mitzvos. Vashti was supposed to appear at the party wearing: כֶתֶר מ ל כוּת a crown on her head, and it didn’t happen.

This is a Remez that she didn’t deserve a crown, since in her life the base Ta'avos ruled, and not the Sechel. Why does it say by Esther: ו י שֶם כֶתֶר מ ל כוּת ב רֹאשׁ הּ אסתר ב יז “he placed a crown on her head”? Isn’t it obvious that she wears a crown if she’s the new queen? Again, we have a Remez that she deserved a crown on a head that used its Sechel.

Tefilin Is the Crown of The Sechel Which Rules Over His Ta'avos

The true Malchus is a person whose Sechel rules over his Ta'avos. According to the Medrash, Esther was much loved because of her Chen and Sechel Tov! And the Passuk: ב נ יס ן נ ג א לוּ If you put yourself in a Ness mode and you keep talking all day about the Nissim of your life, then it will give you a Yeshua וּב נ יס ן ע ת יד ין ל יג א ל
